Balinese Healer

Price: $110++

One of our wellness and yoga retreat participants’ most profound and rewarding activities is a visit to a Balian, a traditional Balinese healer.

There are almost as many types of healers as there are reasons for seeking one’s services. Some healing modalities include medicinal herbs and elixirs while others study the body for tell tale signs of dis-ease’Others may read palms, use numerology or give deep tissue massage to determine the illness or problem. Sessions for this inclusion are almost always hands on/healing massage style treatments. The efficacy of a Bali healer is measured in his or her Taksu, or spiritual power and is evidenced in several ways.

We have been actively studying and documenting this unique and powerful method of healing for over a decade and have forged relationships with half a dozen healers who we feel are among the best on the island and work very well with non-Balinese patients.

Please consider that these sessions take 2 hours on average per person as they are one-on-one. You will need a slot almost daily where your participants can participate. We do it every week and its not difficult to schedule, but we want our leaders to understand that your participants may need either a break in the itinerary or the option to miss an activity in order to take advantage of this unique, and possibly life changing, opportunity. We will handle all the scheduling and logistics for you.

Batur Trekking

Price: $64++

Departure is at 2am and we’ll be back to Floating Leaf at around 11 am. While it’s a sexy claim to be able to say you summited a Bali volcano at sunrise, please be advised it can be very crowded. Because of this, we developed the Charity Trek (above) as it will include just your group. The views are similar to Mt Batur, but the Charity Trek includes the added benefit of meeting and interacting with the villagers, and learning about the great works this charity has accomplished.

Floating Leaf can not be responsible for the third party but we do our best to vet all companies we partner with. This is not a highly recommended activity but we receive many requests so we want to offer it with full disclosure.

Water is normally ankle deep but can be waist high at times so bring only what is necessary. There are guides who are well trained and they know every inch of the terrain. They will let you know where to exactly place your feet and hands in order to make the canyon rocks easily navigated. The colors and formations are exquisite. This activity requires around 1-hour of trekking.

Secret Waterfall and Temple Tour

Price: $54++ ($65net)

If you had just one day in Bali, this is the tour we would suggest most. Start the day with a scenic drive up into  Bali’s Central Highlands with epic viewpoints, lakes, and traditional villages. First stop is one of the most iconic temples in all of Bali, the 11 tiered temple of Pura Ulun Danu that seems to float on Lake Batur. Then depart for Bali’s very best and most impressive waterfalls. We call them the “Secret Falls” as many other falls in Bali are well known and can be crowded, but these are the most majestic falls and we usually have them all to ourselves. There are actually 2 sets or three waterfalls close to each other and you and your guests can swim in the lagoons, get massaged by the falls, and even find natural waterslides. You can choose to have your lunch or a yoga class in the bale near the falls. A moderate level of fitness is required but it is not overly strenuous.

Based on our experience, it is best to leave at 7 AM. Please note that breakfast will serve at 6:30 AM on that day and we will depart at 7 AM for the trip. For this spectacular adventure we suggest to depart early in the morning for several reasons.

Bali Charity Trek

One of the most picturesque treks in Bali has a big added benefit. While the scenery is similar to the Batur trek, this one offers the opportunity to interact with local villagers, understand their lives and situation, and see the great work this charity has provided them. An uplifting and heartfelt experience coupled with the stunning volcano and valley views, this is a day you will not forget.

The experience is approximately 7 hours long. While there are many breaks and it is not continuous hiking, participants should be reasonably fit and able to walk up and down inclines for extended periods. It’s immensely rewarding for all involved and we end up at a nice beachfront hotel for a lunch before heading back to Floating Leaf Eco-Luxury Retreat. The trek is picturesque, educational, deeply rewarding and directly benefits the people and communities in need in a sustainable way. 100% of proceeds go directly to the villages in need. Depart at 5:30am and returns around 4pm. Includes transport, breakfast, lunch, local trekking guides/porters, swimming in the ocean. Learn more here

Purification Ceremony at Floating Leaf

Price: $48++

A Balinese Hindu High Priest, locally known as a Pemangku, comes to Floating Leaf to preside over sacred and traditional rituals and ceremonies. This is a profound, private, and powerful ceremony and each guest receives a Balinese three colored protective bracelet to carry on the purifying aspects of these sacred rituals. Massive amounts of offerings are created for this event and they can be enjoyed in celebration after the ceremonies conclude (many contain edible components). We have to consult the High Priest and the Balinese Calendar to select an appropriate auspicious day to have this Purification Ceremony. We often coordinate this event with the full moon but we should be able to find several options during a week-long retreat.

Normally the rituals begin around 5PM and take approximately 2 hours.

Purification Ceremony and Rituals at Sacred Water Temple

Price: $48++ per Person

Highly recommended as it’s a great insight into the mystical and deeply spiritual Balinese way of life.

A purification ceremony or Melukat ritual is a traditional spiritual cleansing ritual and part of the Manusa Yadnya (Balinese Hindu life event progression). Its purpose is to purify a human body and soul. It is said to wash away turmoil and sickness acquired from negative karma in both this life and past lives.

The purification ceremony can be held at Tirta Empul Water Temple. We will serve breakfast at 6 AM for this day and we will depart to the Water Temple at 6:30 AM. After the Purification Ceremony, we can visit a coffee plantation to sample special teas and coffees including the worlds most expensive coffee, Kopi Luwak (optional), and a traditional painting village and Balinese compound (optional). Return time will be around 1 or 2 PM for Lunch. Guests can also choose to be dropped off in Ubud to tour the sites, shopping, and even nightlife. Return time will be around 1 or 2 PM for Lunch (for those who choose not to include Ubud).

Offering Making Class

This class is included at no charge with Purification Ceremony and Rituals at Sacred Water Temple. As a stand alone workshop it is $ 9++ ($11 net) per person.

Work with our staff to learn the power, symbolism, and purpose of these ubiquitous spiritual artworks found all over Bali. In a hands on workshop, learn to create your very own all natural flower offering which you can use in your purification ceremony, a ritual of your own, or to have in your room with you as a reminder of the mystical spirituality found on the Island of the Gods. The class runs for 30-60 minutes depending on the size of the group and how many questions they may have. Its all up to you!

There are several types of Balinese offerings or banten, however the most common is canang sari, the daily offerings that is given by all the Balinese people to the God “Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa” and a supplication to the lower spirits that they do not disturb the living. Learn how to arrange the offerings and know the symbolism of the colors and the meaning of the offerings.

If this workshop is part of the purification ceremony, the offering making class should be the day before temple purification because we will use the offering that we will create.

Tibetan Singing Bowl Sound Therapy

Sound Vibrations for Chakra and Nadi balancing are not for:

Om Swastiastu,

– Pregnant Woman
– People with PaceMaker
– People with metal implants or joint replacement

What is Sound Healing?

Sound healing is an ancient technique used to realign our physical, emotional and spiritual world. This therapy is based on the principle that everything in the universe is vibrating energy – from the biggest mountain or ocean to the tiniest blade of grass, and even each individual cell in our body. The sound of the Singing Bowl touches our innermost soul and tunes us back into nature’s frequencies. The sound breaks down tension, mobilizes self healing forces, and sets free creative energies.

How does a Singing Bowl work?

Singing Bowls work through sound and vibration. It’s deep vibration stimulates the energy meridians, blood vessels, lymph and nerves on a cellular level. This helps to balance your energy channels (Nadis), your energy centers (Chakras) and to relax tense body parts. Kundalini energy which begins at the base of the spine is released, travelling upwards along the spine through the body. When this occurs you may experience twitching muscles or even some discomfort, if there are blockages along the Nadis. The vibrations of the Singing Bowl helps our body to heal and to re-tune into the divine frequencies every living being and the universe is made of.

How does sound heal us?

The sounds generated by Tibetan Singing Bowls are a type of energy medicine that promote healing from stress disorders, pain, depression, and most forms of dis-ease. Healing processes are initiated through entraining our brainwaves to synchronize with the perfect resonance of the bowls. Unique tones create the perfect state for deep meditation, creative thinking and intuitive messages. The pure sonic waves that ring from Tibetan Singing Bowls wake up our ability to hear with more than our ears. We feel the sound as much as we take it in with our ears.

How does sound healing work, on the energetic level?

As you probably also recall from your basic science classes, human bodies are 75% water, which is a great conductor for vibrations. Sound healers use instruments, such as Tibetan bowls, crystal bowls, glasses, gongs and even tuning forks, that vibrate at specific frequencies when struck. These vibrations correspond to specific emotions. Many people don’t want to feel sadness or grief, so they close their heart chakras rather than allowing themselves to feel these uncomfortable emotions. When the sound practitioner strikes this bowl, they release the healing vibration of the heart chakra into the body of the person being healed. This opens the heart chakra, allowing it to release the trapped negative emotions.

The science behind healing

From a traditional medical perspective sound is perceived through the ear. However, as more scientific evidence has emerged, researchers have found that sound is felt physically via vibrations in the body. These vibrations can have a multitude of effects on a person.

Sound healing works in four ways:

Sympathetic resonance

Scientifically speaking, sympathetic resonance is when the vibrations in one object produce vibrations in another. For example, if you have two tuning forks close to one another, if you strike one, it will cause the other tuning fork to vibrate at a similar frequency. This is the principle that causes the body to vibrate at the same frequency as the sounds produced by crystal bowls, gongs, tuning forks and other sound healing instruments.

Brainwave entrainment

Brainwave entrainment refers to the capacity of the brain to naturally synchronize its brainwave frequencies with the rhythm of external stimuli. In practical terms, this means that your brainwave frequencies synchronize with the frequencies produced by sound healing instruments. The positive frequencies allow your cells to operate in harmony with each other, healing organs, bones and uncomfortable emotional states.

Frequency Following Response

Brainwaves are directly linked to mental states of consciousness. There are different types of brainwaves: delta, theta, alpha and beta waves. Relatively slow delta waves are emitted during sleep, faster theta waves are emitted during meditation and beta waves (the fastest) are emitted when we are problem solving or focussing on particular tasks. Sound waves that correspond to these four types of brain waves are generated when the sound healing practitioner strikes specific bowls. For example, the sound healer uses instruments that produce vibrations corresponding to the brain’s theta waves (4-8 hertz) to induce the positive feelings and healing experienced during meditation.

Balance the brain’s left and right hemispheres

The left and right sides of the brain are very different. The left side of the brain is associated with logic and problem solving. The right side of the brain is associated with creativity. In most people, the right or left side of the brain is dominant. Sound healing works on both sides of the brain to develop areas where we might be weak and improve communication between the hemispheres.

Benefits of Sound Therapy

Some of the most common benefits of sound therapy are: Triggers the relaxation response
Reduces blood pressure
Alleviates symptoms of chronic stress

Releases and harmonizes the mind, body and spirit

Our exclusive and complimentary art and culture tour was created to help our guests get the very best of what is available. We bring you right into the workshops of the best artists to not only show you how it is made, but ensure you get the absolute best price on top quality merchandise. We help you bargain on already special prices for our groups. We have longstanding relationships with the very top artists so we know they craft high-quality goods. This is important as you don’t want to get home and realize you purchased inferior products. This is crucial for textiles, clothing and especially woodcarvings. If the wood is not cured properly once you bring it to a new climatic region, or it ages naturally, it can crack and break. Our guests love this special experience and its one of our most highly rated excursions. It only takes a few hours as all the workshops are in surrounding villages. It can even be broken up over a couple days. If you are considering buying anything during your time in Bali, this is the way to do it. We suggest this trip on day 2 as it’s a great, easy, fun and informative activity that people can enjoy even if they are jet lagged. Plus, having it early in your trip allows you to have items customized or place special orders.

Charity Inclusion

The charity donation event is a complimentary offering and we encourage all leaders to include a charitable aspect to their retreats. There are many options.

The charity trek, while not complimentary is a worthwhile adventure. You can learn more about the charity trek here. It’s highly recommended and all proceeds go to charity. It’s $120 per person including meals. You can also make it optional.

As far as a free of charge charity event, donations such as clothing, medical supplies, art supplies, school supplies, and children’s toys will be greatly appreciated. You can have your participants bring items from home and then we can see what they bring. Based on the donations collected, we may need to subsidize with purchasing items here to be sure there is enough and we have the right type of donations. It’s usually about $5-10 per person, if needed, and we can have a great event. We usually go to a school with children in need, an orphanage, or a clinic, and have a wonderful afternoon teaching, playing, singing songs, etc. It’s incredibly rewarding and inspiring. Usually held on a weekday morning.

Free Room, Board, and Activities for the Retreat Leader
